Demand action on climate change this Friday – Ní Riada

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada is urging as many people as possible to get behind the planned protests for action on climate change this Friday.

The Ireland South MEP said it was important people showed the Government that climate change is a real issue and action must be taken immediately.

“There are more than 20 protests organised across the country on Friday and they have been coordinated to coincide with school strikes for action on climate change,” she said.

“No matter where you are there will be an event near you and if there isn’t one then make one.

“I will be attending the protest at Cork City Hall at 1pm and I would encourage as many people as possible to get involved.

“It´s time for governments across Europe to wake up to the realities and dangers of climate change. We have just a few short years left to act boldly and decisively if we want to avoid catastrophic damage to our planet.

“We see on one hand, Leo Varadkar in the Dáil saying he is inspired by the young people taking action, yet a proposal to invite 16-year-old Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg, who has become the face of the Climate Action movement, to address the European Parliament was vetoed by both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael’s political groups in Brussels.

“If we want to leave a habitable planet for our children and grand children and all future generations then we need action, not empty words.”

“So I would urge everyone to get out there on Friday, raise your voice and play your part in quite literally, saving the planet.”
