Liadh calls for Repeal on International Women’s Day

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has called on people to back the March4Repeal Movement this International Women’s Day.

The Ireland South MEP said that international Women’s Day was not just a celebration but a protest and that the theme of this year’s event was need for repeal of the 8th Amendment.

“International Women’s Day was first celebrated back in 1911 when women came together worldwide to campaign for better pay, voting rights and an end to discrimination,” she said.

“Today it continues to be celebrated by women everywhere, and has become a global day of recognition of women’s contribution to society celebrating the economic, political, social and cultural achievements of women.

“Everyone agrees that women have come a long way since the first International Women’s Day in 1911, but unfortunately Gender Inequality is still very much prevalent in Irish society.

“Women continue to be physically and emotional effected by domestic and sexual violence which can have a lasting effect on their health and emotional well being and also their lifetime opportunities.

“They still do not enjoy Equal Pay and continue to face barriers when accessing work due to a lack of childcare provision. Evidence has shown they have also been unfairly impacted upon more as a result of current budget and welfare cuts.“One of the most egregious acts of discrimination women continue to face is the 8th Amendment.

“The 8th Amendment has no place in the Irish Constitution and it’s repeal and replacement with legislation to allow for terminations in cases of fatal foetal abnormalities, rape and incest is crucial for the safety and welfare of women in Ireland.

“The removal of risk to a woman’s life, health and well-being must be central to the discussion and to any legislation enacted.

“This International Women’s Day take part in the fight for safety and respect for women.”
