Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has expressed her profound sadness at the death of Martin McGuinness.

The Ireland South MEP said the former Joint First Minister was “a determined and fearless campaigner for peace, justice and freedom.”

“Martin McGuinness’ death will be felt right across Ireland, not just by those in Sinn Féin but by every single man, woman and child who is currently benefiting from the better Ireland he struggled all his life to build.

“He was never deterred from this goal despite being under the constant threat of death from loyalists colluding with British state forces and later from criminal gangs that have the gall to call themselves republicans, despite not being fit to lace his boots.

“The same bravery and commitment to freedom and peace that drove him to defend his community on the streets of Derry also drove him to form lasting friendships with former enemies and lead the way in the Peace Process.

“I had the pleasure of working with Martin directly on several occasions. He was keenly aware that Europe had a critical role to play in building peace in Ireland and most recently had worked closely with all Sinn Féin MEPs in the battle against Brexit and the reintroduction of borders. He never tired when it came to standing up for the Irish people at home or abroad.

“His contribution to Irish society is immeasurable and one people here will benefit from for generations; we all have a duty to follow his example.

“The Irish nation has today lost a true leader and patriot but even more so our thoughts go out to his wife Bernadette, his children Grainne, Fionnuala, Fiachra and Emmet and all those who knew him best; you will all be in our prayers.

“I measc laochra na nGael go raibh a anam dílis.”
