Irish students encouraged to avail of free interrail tickets – Ní Riada

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada is encouraging Irish students to take advantage of free interrail tickets being offered by the EU.

The Ireland South MEP, who sits on the Culture and Education Committee, urged students to avail of the scheme which will allow young people to apply for one of 20,000 free interrail tickets once they turn 18.

“This project, initiated by the European Parliament, provides a unique opportunity for young Irish people to explore Europe over a period of up to three weeks at a time of their choosing,” she said.

“Nothing broadens the mind like travelling and this project will help students immerse themselves in an array of European cultures.

“Indeed, interrailing is already a popular way for many young people to experience Europe but it is not always accessible to everyone.

“This initiative will be of huge financial assistance and make travel much more affordable for young people in Ireland.

“Interrail tickets can cost upwards of €300 depending on the length of journey, so this is a tremendous initiative for any young person to apply for.

“The responsibility for the rollout of this scheme now lies with the European Commission and there is ongoing contact between the European Parliament and European Commission to ensure this happens without delay.

“More details on how and when the scheme will be launched are due in March and I will provide further information as soon as it becomes available to me.

“As always my office is open to anyone interested in applying for tickets once the scheme is launched. Happy travelling.”
